Laura Kinsale

Laura Kinsale grew up in a small country town, surrounded by the influence of her family's women: her mother, her grandmother and some maiden aunts. During her childhood she dreamed to be a painter, own a twenty-thousand acre ranch in Arizona or the first woman president. But, she became interested into geology because near her grandmother's house, there was a road-cut, that it showed the layers of limestone clearly, and there were fossils in it. Laura obtained a Master of Science in Geology from the University of Texas at Austin. She worked as petroleum geologist, a career which consisted of getting out of bed in the middle of the night and driving hundreds of miles alone across west Texas to sit at drilling rigs, wear a hard hat, and attempt to boss around oil-covered males considerably larger than herself. While working, also spending a great deal of time sitting rigs and living in horrid little motel courts in small towns, and she started reading a lot. It was pure escapism for her. She didn't really consider writing as a serious career until she figured out her first plot, at thirty-five years after six years as a geologist. Laura Kinsale became a winner and multiple nominee for the Best Book of the Year award given by the Romance Writers of America. Her heroes are full of flaws or with physical problems, and her heroines also are imperfect. She says: "It's well known that I think making the heroine too perfect is a great way to create a character readers will hate!". She spend long periods of time, attempting to figure out What-Happens-Next, and she confesses that her husband, David, greatly assists her in figuring out how to end a scene. She says: "Really, his name should go also on the cover too, but he refuses. I wonder why?". From 1985 to 1994, she wrote one book a year, but she decided she needed more time to write her books. Laura divides her time between Santa Fe and Dallas.

Lester del Rey was born Leonard Knapp in Saratoga, Minnesota, the son of poor sharecroppers of partly Spanish ancestry. His mother died shortly after his birth, and he managed to complete high school and two years at George Washington University before dropping out for economic reasons. He started publishing stories in pulp magazines in the late 1930s. He was closely associated Astounding Science Fiction, then the leading science fiction magazine. In 1935, his first wife was killed in a car accident. By 1947 he had written enough solid short fiction to generate his first book, the anthology And Some Were Human. In 1947 he met the literary agent Scott Meredith at a convention and he began working for Meredith's agency as a reader and office manager. He later made his way into editing for pulp magazines and then for book publishers. Lucy Clark

Lucy Clark was born in England in the Lake District, but at the age of two, her parents decided to move to Australia and thankfully took her with them. Lucy loves the sunburst country, the land of sweeping plains, with its rugged mountain ranges and droughts and flooding rains! She recalls only happiness during her childhood, even when her two older sisters and older brother used to tease and manipulate her (like all older siblings). She first discovered a passion for the written word when receiving excellent grades in her comprehension and English lessons and rather appalling grades for everything else. A "late bloomer" in the reading department, she would sit up until all ours of the night (or early morning) devouring one romance novel after the other. At the age of seventeen, she decided she could write one, and immediately knew she'd found her calling in life. She wrote her first manuscript, sent it over the wide, blue ocean to the offices of Mills & Boon in London and received a very nice rejection letter. The devastation set in. Dreams of becoming a well-known romance writer, of travelling the world, of book-signing tours, of international recognition…were blown away with the wind. After meeting Peter, the man of her dreams and marrying him, Lucy decided to once more try her hand at writing a romance. While working full time in a teaching hospital as a medical secretary for two busy orthopaedic surgeons, she typed up a fresh story and submitted it for publication. Rejection again. Although by this time, she'd called for reinforcements—her romance writing group. They provided counselling (lunches) and support (dinners). Then one day she had an idea! Lucy decided to try and write a Medical Romance book in collaboration with her husband. This she did and broke through the barriers into the publishing world. Elation! Excitement! Euphoria! When she floated down from the clouds, she now realized the enormous task that lay ahead in producing further work. Planning books is now a necessity, editing is an appalling process that unfortunately must be done. Ideas, medical research, characters, situations and settings now fill most of her time…along with her family, of course. Lucy and Peter currently live in Adelaide, Australia, and have the desire to travel the world with their children. Lucy largely credits her writing success to the support of her husband, family and friends. She looks forward to a long and happy association with her characters, her editors and her readers with only one eternal wish. That the dry sense of humor she and her husband share doesn't get her into trouble, as it often has in the past!

Samuel Beckett

Samuel Barclay Beckett was an Irish avant-garde writer, dramatist and poet, writing in English and French. Beckett's work offers a bleak outlook on human culture and both formally and philosophically became increasingly minimalist in his later career. As a student, assistant, and friend of James Joyce, Beckett is considered one of the last modernists; as an inspiration to many later writers, he is sometimes considered one of the first postmodernists. He is also considered one of the key writers in what Martin Esslin called "Theatre of the Absurd." As such, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969 for his "writing, which—in new forms for the novel and drama—in the destitution of modern man acquires its elevation". Beckett was elected Saoi of Aosdána in 1984. He died in Paris of respiratory problems. (Source)

Once a columnist in The Listener and The Daily Telegraph, he now writes a weekly technology column in the Saturday edition of The Guardian. His blog attracted more than 300,000 visitors in its first two weeks of existence. On 26 May 2009, Fry unveiled The Dongle of Donald Trefusis, an audiobook series following the character Donald Trefusis (a character from Fry's novel The Liar and from the BBC Radio 4 series Loose Ends), set over 12 episodes.
