Henning Mankell
Henning Mankell was born in Stockholm, Sweden, the son of a judge. He grew up in the towns of Sveg and Borås. His grandfather, also called Henning Mankell (1868–1930), was a well-known composer. At the age of 20, Mankell was the assistant director at the Riks Theater in Stockholm, and he was also writing. In the 1970s he moved to Norway, where he lived with a woman who was a member of the Maoist Communist Labour Party, although he never officially joined the Party. He moved to Africa and lived in several African countries, and in 1985 he founded the Avenida Theater in Maputo, Mozambique, where he continues to spend about half of every year. In 1997 he began his most well-known series of novels, a series of murder mysteries set in Ystad, Sweden, featuring the police detective Kurt Wallander. He also established a publishing house, Leopard Förlag, to publish young talents from both Africa and Sweden. He is married to Eva Bergman, daughter of Ingmar Bergman.

Connu pour la précision et le graphisme de ses compositions (jamais recadrées au tirage), il s'est surtout illustré dans la photographie de rue, la représentation des aspects pittoresques ou signifiants de la vie quotidienne (Les Européens). Avec Robert Capa, David Seymour, William Vandivert et George Rodger, ils fondent en 1947 l'agence coopérative Magnum Photos. Le concept de « l'instant décisif » est souvent utilisé à propos de ses photos, mais on peut l'estimer trop réducteur et préférer celui de « tir photographique », qui prend le contexte en compte. Pour certains, il est une figure mythique de la photographie du XXe siècle, qu'une relative longévité de sa carrière photographique lui permet de traverser, en portant son regard sur les évènements majeurs qui ont jalonné le milieu du siècle. En 2003, un an avant sa mort, une fondation portant son nom est créée à Paris pour assurer la conservation et la présentation de son œuvre ainsi que pour soutenir et exposer les photographes dont il se sentait proche. A noter que l’exposition Henri Cartier-Bresson au Centre Pompidou en 2014 a pour la première fois mis l'accent sur son activité militante pour le parti communiste, dans la période 1936-1946.

Daniel-Rops (Henri Petiot's literary pseudonym) was born in Épinal in 1901 and died in Chambéry in 1965. He was professor of history and director of Ecclesiae magazine (Paris), and became world-famous mainly for works of historiography: (1943), Jesus in his time (1945), and the ten volumes of the History of the Church of Christ (1948 - 1965). He has also authored several essays, works of children's literature and historical novels, among which are Death, where is your victory? (1934) and The Sword of Fire (1938). He was a voter for the French Academy in 1955.

Henrik Ibsen was a major 19th-century Norwegian playwright, theatre director, and poet.
