Better Homes and Gardens (stylized as Better Homes & Gardens and abbreviated as BHG) is the fourth most widely circulated magazine in the United States. Better Homes and Gardens focuses on interests regarding homes, cooking, gardening, crafts, healthy living, decorating, and entertaining. The magazine is published 12 times per year by Dotdash Meredith (formerly Meredith Corporation). Better Homes and Gardens was founded in 1922 by Edwin Meredith, who served as the United States Secretary of Agriculture under Woodrow Wilson and had previously founded the magazine Successful Farming. The original title was Fruit, Garden and Home. The name was changed to Better Homes and Gardens beginning with the August 1924 issue. Betty Beaty was a romance fiction author. A very bright student, Betty got a scholarship to Bradford Grammar School from where her love for literature was encouraged. Being a compassionate person, she decided to study social work at Leeds University, and later, enjoyed her works in children's home and local hospitals. Her study was disrupted in 1939, due to the declaration of WWII. After completing her degree in 1940, Betty joined the Women's Royal Air Force and eventually was posted to Orkney Islands where its gales and harsh geography impressed her greatly. In 1945, while at Oaklington, Betty met her husband, Captain David Beaty (Arthur David Beaty (1919-1999), British writer, pilot and psychologist). They married in 1948 in Cheshire. Leaving the WAAF (Women's Auxiliary Air Force) at the end of the WWII, Betty worked as a medical social worker. She and her husband lived in Montreal Canada for a while, but returned to England in 1950. It was then that Betty Beaty decided to try her hand at writing as a reply to a dare from her husband. Betty passed away in 2014. From books listed by 'Fantastic Fictions' website, she wrote 21 romance (as Betty Beaty), one was with her husband (Wings of The Morning, 1982, based on true events). Betty Brooks was born and raised in Palo Pinto County, the second eldest of eleven children. During her early years, she roamed the Palo Pinto Mountains with her brothers, developing a love for the outdoors that remains to this day. She became an avid reader in grade school and her love of books has stayed with her throughout the years. In 1953, she married her high school sweetheart. Two years later, he was drafted into the army. His military career spanned twenty years and brought the family (one son and two daughters) to Michigan, Minnesota, California, El Paso, TX, and Germany. When James retired in 1976, they moved back to their hometown of Mineral Wells, TX. There, Ms. Brooks began her writing career. Her first book, Savage Flame, was published by Zebra in March, 1987. A national best seller, it was nominated by Romantic Times (RT) for "Best Indian Romance" by a new author. Her Apache quartet was nominated by RT for "Best Western Romance Series" of the year. In total, Ms. Brooks has written twenty Historical Romances for Zebra Books. 1999 brings the release of three new Betty Brooks titles. A Place in my Heart will be available in April, A Wayward Heart in December, and her novelette, Mail Order Love, is offered as lead title in Zebra's anthology Always A Bride (May 1999)
