He took to writing fiction late in life. His first novel was published in 1927 and the first of the Philip Tolefree mysteries appeared in 1932. Tolefree is nominally an insurance investigator, but more of an amateur sleuth. His police comrade in crime is Inspector Pierce.

Dr. Randall I. Charles is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mathematics at San Jose State University, San Jose, California. He has dedicated his life to mathematics education and works closely to train teachers at all grade levels. Raymond A. Moody Jr. is an American philosopher, psychiatrist, physician, and author, most widely known for his books about afterlife and near-death experiences (NDE), a term that he coined in 1975 in his best-selling book Life After Life. His research explores personal accounts of subjective phenomena encountered in near-death experiences, particularly those of people who have apparently died but been resuscitated. He has widely published his views on what he terms near-death-experience psychology. He earned a BA (1966), an M.A. (1967), and a PhD (1969) in philosophy from the University of Virginia. He also earned a PhD in psychology from the University of West Georgia, then known as West Georgia College, where he later became a professor in the topic. In 1976, he earned an M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia. Inspired by the Greek psychomanteums where the ancient Greeks would go to consult the apparitions of the dead (which Moody had read about in classic Greek texts that he encountered while a student at the University of Virginia), Moody built a psychomanteum in Alabama, which he calls the Dr. John Dee Theater of the Mind. Moody has also researched past life regression via hypnosis. In 2023, Moody coauthored Proof of Life After Life: 7 Reasons to Believe There Is an Afterlife with Paul Perry. Drawing on nearly fifty years of research, the book presents case studies, expert interviews, and theoretical insights to argue that consciousness survives bodily death. Raymond Edward Brown
Raymond Edward Brown SS was an American Catholic priest, a member of the Sulpician Fathers and a prominent biblical scholar. He was regarded as a specialist concerning the hypothetical "Johannine community", which he speculated contributed to the authorship of the Gospel of John, and he also wrote influential studies on the birth and death of Jesus. Brown was professor emeritus at Union Theological Seminary (UTS) in New York where he taught for 29 years. He was the first Catholic professor to gain tenure there, where he earned a reputation as a superior lecturer. Brown was one of the first Catholic scholars to apply historical-critical analysis to the Bible. As biblical criticism developed in the 19th century, the Catholic Church opposed this scholarship and essentially forbade it in 1893. In 1943, however, the Church issued the papal encyclical Divino Afflante Spiritu, which authorised Catholic scholars to investigate the Bible historically. Brown called this encyclical the "Magna Carta of biblical progress." The Second Vatican Council (Vatican II) further supported the method of higher criticism, which, Brown felt, vindicated his approach. Brown remains controversial among traditionalist Catholics because of their claim that he denied the inerrancy of the whole of scripture and cast doubt on the historical accuracy of numerous articles of the Catholic faith. Some conservatives were angered at his questioning of whether the virginal conception of Jesus could be proven historically. He was regarded as occupying the center ground in the field of biblical studies, opposing the literalism found among many fundamentalist Christians while not carrying his conclusions as far as many other scholars.

Raymond Hull
Not until he was 30 years old did Raymond Hull discover his own writing talent. It was only after responding to an advertisement for a summer school course in creative writing, at the University of British Columbia, that he was encouraged to believe that he had an aptitude for writing. Over the next eight years, Hull continued to study and write in his spare time, attending night school and summer school courses, writers' clubs and conferences, all the time supporting himself by a succession of low paying jobs. After years writing short stories and poetry, Hull began to write and sell television plays to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He branched into the writing of stage plays and eventually formed The Gastown Players, a semi-professional company specializing in the production of melodramas, including his own plays: The Drunkard, Son of the Drunkard (now known as The Drunkard's Revenge), and Wedded to a Villain, all of which are published by Pioneer Drama Service. Hull next began writing magazine articles and non-fiction books, teaching night school classes, and lecturing on creative writing. He is best known as the co-author of the book, The Peter Principle. Raymond Hull died in June, 1985.
